AMP Comics has officially acquired the comic book publishing rights to the beloved cult classic The Greatest American Hero. The groundbreaking superhero series, which originally aired from 1981–1983, will return in an all-new comic series premiering in 2026, which will be led by an all-star creative team that includes the original Hero himself, William Katt, coming onboard as an executive producer.
In a move that’s sure to thrill longtime fans, Katt will also reprise his iconic role as Ralph Hinkley, this time in comic-book form, bringing the character back to life in a brand-new storyline that stays true to the original series’ heart and humor.
The creative team behind the reboot features Tawnia McKiernan, daughter of the late series creator and TV legend Stephen J.Cannell, alongside Don Handfield, CEO of AMP Comics, who will co-write the story. Handfield will write the initial arc with other writers, including AMP editor-in-chief Joshua Malkin, who is set to step in for subsequent issues.
“The Greatest American Hero was ahead of its time—quirky, heartfelt, and deeply human,” said Handfield. “We’re honored to continue its legacy and couldn’t be more excited to have William Katt involved every step of the way. Being a part of this franchise is a boyhood dream come true.”
The series is slated for release in 2026, with plans to feature signings and a fan celebration at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where William Katt and other cast members will reunite to promote the launch.
Tawnia McKiernan added, “As a child, my favorite show of my dad’s was GAH. Watching Ralph navigate his life, which had been invaded by a supersuit, while dealing with Bill Maxwell’s pushy demeanor, was the highlight of my day. This buddy superhero show was so much fun to watch! And as my dad often said, “fun to write.” I look forward to collaborating with this amazing team and can’t wait to see where the suit takes us next. Here we go: The Greatest American Hero!”
This acquisition represents a significant milestone for AMP Comics, a rising publisher that has quickly established itself through creator-owned originals. The Greatest American Hero marks the company's first venture into licensed titles, bringing AMP's commitment to quality storytelling to a cherished classic.
Believe it or not… he’s back.
“The Home” has the appearance of a slow-burn snore, but its essential organs are grown out of grindhouse gruesomeness and B-movie battiness.
